Week Journal 5 (March 4 2016)

Photo: A composition test I graded

 Significant Situation
I made, graded, and corrected the students' composition essay. I made the test by choosing three persuasive topics, which resemble the ones from the previous composition test. I made the students take the test on Friday and this went smoothly; there were no complications. The students handed in their essays and left. I took the tests home and started grading the papers according to the way my coach taught me the previous week with the hand of the score sheet.

Reflection
I chose to make the test by copying the previous test, because then I knew for a fact that it was the correct level and that the students were familiar with the material and format of EPI.

The effect of this was that students knew exactly what to expect from the composition test and at what level it was going to be. This helps the students while they prepare to take the test.

I did not receive any feedback for this lesson.

This was important to me, because I want to be able to make my own test, to grade my own test, and to be able to give the students' their grades on my own. The reason that this is important to me is that I want to be able to be an individual and professional teacher.

My conclusions are that I am a didactic teacher who can work independently. (However, my coach did help me teach me how to correct the tests according to EPI standards.)

My learning aim for next week is:
-Undecided (there will be numerous ATV days, vacation days, holidays)
Until April 4 or 11th!

My sub-aim is to try to greet everybody before class starts.

My sub-aim is to keep a check on the time that I have left for each planned activity.

My sub-aim is to be informative when explaining the outline, grammar rules, etc.
I will write the topic on the board.
I will greet the students.  I will go through the schedule on the board with the students.

I will ask the students to have nothing on their table as I hand each student their test. I will briefly go through the test then give students time to read their results and to ask me any questions regarding their test. I will answer any of the students’ questions.

I will give the students instructions on how to log into my Socrative room in order to take the two grammar tests (relative and indefinite pronoun test and prepositions test). I will answer the students’ grammar rules questions after each quiz is done.

I will give the students 4 argumentative topics and instruct them to write their essay using the computers in the ICT classroom (which we will be in for this lesson). I will make sure students are actually working on their essays. I will correct the students essay once they’ve e-mailed them to me and I will send them their essay, which is now corrected back.

I will give turns to some students and correct the students when they make slight mistakes.
I will then say good-bye to the students.

The students listen and ask question when necessary.

Each student will check if their test has been checked correctly by me or if there are mistakes that need to be revised. The students raise their hands when they want to answer a question or ask one, sit, and listen with open ears.

The students can ask questions about the exercises, if they do not understand something. The students will need to do the quizzes on their own.

The students will pick one topic and write an argumentative essay about this topic. The students work individually on their essay and e-mail the teacher once he/she is done. The students will revise his/her essay at home or during the class if there is still time.
I will also write today’s schedule for the class to see before the class starts:
1. Introduction
2. Check tests/ Get grades
3. Grammar quizzes (2)
4. Argumentative essay writing
à Teacher online correction

Significant Situation
I developed a lesson focusing on grammar quizzes and writing an argumentative essay. I wanted to also focus on the students' 21st century skills in order to focus on my competence 3: didactics, which is why I made two online quizzes using Socrative. My POP for this internship is: "I want to be able to use ICT in my English classes effectively in order to develop as a 21st century skilled teacher".

Reflection
I chose to use an online teaching tool, Socrative, in order for the students to be able to individually choose the correct or incorrect answer and for them to be able to do it on their own time. I chose to use ICT in order for me to develop as a 21st century skilled teacher so that the students can be motivated to practice their English language skills in a new way, which will motivate them to learn.

The effect of this was that students were motivated to participate, because it was something new to them.

My students said; "we should do it again more often, because it was fun and a different way of learning English".

This was important to me, because I want to develop as a 21st century skilled teacher.

My conclusions are that I am a didactic teacher who focuses on developing her 21st century skills in order to motivate the students with fun new teaching tools.

My learning aim for next week is:
-To grade, correct, make the first composition test

Week Journal 3 (February 19 2016)

FS3-1B students' persuasive essay:

I-pads and online resources should replace textbooks

(Indent!) We live in a world where we use technology everyday, why not take the advantage from it and start using it for schoolwork instead of using tons of paper for textbooks. I-pads are a quality device and should be used at school as textbooks and notebooks.

(Indent!) They are chopping down trees to make textbooks and papers that at one point we will throw away. If more students start using I-pads then after time the amount of trees that they chop per year will decrease, which is good for the environment.

(Indent!) It is also more easier because if you have all your books saved in an I-pad, you won’t need to carry a heavy bag everyday to school and notebooks take lots of space. Also books can be very expensive on the I-pads it might be a bit more affordable and easier to find.

(Indent!) The only negative part is that they might use it to cheat or to talk to each other instead of reading or doing schoolwork. But--> However, that can easily be fixed by turning off the Wi-Fi when it’s not needed so that they wont be able to chat during class, only when the teacher allows it she/he can turn the Wi-Fi back on.

(Indent!) Yet--> Nevertheless, I still think that replacing textbooks with I-pads is a really good idea and should be a thing right now at schools. Carrying heavy books around can be avoided by using I-pads and you can E-mail your teachers your assignments right away after you’re done. And--> Also, it might be easier for the teachers to grade it afterwards and send it back so that you know what was wrong or what needs to be fixed.

Significant Situation
I teach English 102: composition, which is to say I teach the students how to write essays. During this week the students wrote a persuasive essay. I teach the students how to outline their essays and then I correct them after they've e-mailed them to me. Above is an example of my corrections in red of a students' persuasive essay.

Reflection
I chose to correct the students' homework individually and via e-mail, because each student of the FS department has a different level of English. This is because some of them come from HAVO, MAVO, EPB (a type of VWO on Aruba) and this causes each first-year class to have varying levels of English. I chose to correct them individually so that each student gets enough attention from me in order to develop their English language skills. I chose to do this via e-mail so that the students could always save their essay with my feedback and see their development as the weeks passed. In my opinion, it's always best to look back and see how far a student has gotten; this helps their motivation when one realizes that there has been progress in their English language skills.

The effect of this way of correcting is that the students are able to clearly see their progress and they are able to revise their mistakes.

My students said that this was clearly helping them, because they save all the essays with the corrections and when there's a test they go through their own essays in order to see what they need to do, what they should avoid writing, and how the essay should look like.

This was important to me, because I want to help the students to better their English skills, to help them be motivated, and to shape their own learning processes with regards to the choices they make (write essays, revise the essays individually and independently).

My conclusions are that I am a pedagogical teacher, because I work on creating a supporting learning environment in order for the students to be able to develop their English language skills by working individually and independently on their essays .

My learning aim for next week is:
-To develop a lesson focusing on grammar quizzes and writing an argumentative essay

 Significant Situation
My coach gave me the task of tweaking the students' syllabus for all the first year FS (Further Studies) students that I had. I asked one of my colleagues to help me out with this as it was my first time working with their schedule and their materials. We sat down together on Friday and my colleague was able to help me figure out what I was teaching, when I should teach it, and she even helped me out by showing me examples of the materials I should use during my lessons.

Reflection
I chose to ask my colleague for help, because I needed helpful insight into how to organize the planner and with what materials I should work with.

The effect was that this student thought I was too young and too childish (she didn't say this, but this was in my viewpoint implied) to be their teacher. However, I don't think that's the case at all. It was my way of getting to know one of my students. The effect of this was that I was able to work on my organizational skills, which is one of the competences I needed to work on for this internship in order to graduate.

I sent my students the syllabus and they said it was very clear. They knew exactly what to expect for each lesson, what they need to bring for each lesson and they knew when the tests, mid-terms and finals were.
The students said I was very organized and on top of things, because I follow the schedule I made.

This was important to me, because I want to be known as a very organized and structured teacher to my students as well as my colleagues in order to be a fully-developed, professional teacher.
I value being organized as a teacher and it is something I work hard at. What this says about me as a teacher is that I value being considered organized by not only myself but also my students and colleagues.

My conclusions are that I know how to work make a syllabus on my own now, which is very important to be able to do as a teacher.

My learning aim for next week is:
-To focus on correcting the students' homework

Internship Progress
Next week I will be focusing on correcting the students' persuasive essay.
