Week Journal 1 (January 29 2016)

Significant Situation
At the start of my first lesson with FS3-1C I was early so I wrote down the schedule for the day on the whiteboard and exchanged a couple of words with my new students. One student in particular caught my eye, because she was playing a 3DS game I loved and I spoke to her about it passionately. I did that until it was time to start my lesson. When I started that student was amazed that I was their new teacher.

Reflection
I chose to do this, to talk to the student about the game, because it was genuinely something I was interested about and I thought it was a nice ice-breaker. This was such an easy way to get to know one of my new students. At the time, I didn't see anything wrong with it.

The effect was that this student thought I was too young and too childish (she didn't say this, but this was in my viewpoint implied) to be their teacher. However, I don't think that's the case at all. It was my way of getting to know one of my students.

Most students must have agreed with that student, because they were also confused as to who I was and when I told the class that "Yes, I am your new English composition teacher", there were numerous 'Oh...'s heard around the room.

I did not get any feedback from this lesson.

This was important to me, because I wanted to really analyze my behavior with that class and to see if I still think I did the right thing. And I do believe that I did. Especially, that I was able to introduce myself right off the bat and I was able to switch the conversation to English after that. This was definitely a defining moment ffor me, because I could have let the students keep talking about how they couln't believe I was their teacher. Instead, I stopped them from talking all around me and answered their questions by introducing myself to them. I value being taken seriously as a teacher, because I want the students to trust that they are being taught by a professional. What this says about me as a teacher is that I am a serious teacher and I am able to handle the class management right off the bat with this class.

My conclusions are that I know how to work with the different student dynamics by taken the reign and leading my students. Also, I can conclude that I am foremost a professional teacher.

My learning aim for next week is:
-Making a syllabi

Internship Progress
Next week I'm going to be busy making two syllabi and I will be doing this with the help of my colleagues.
